Omega Seamaster Cup
Coutts, Barker, Law and Beadsworth into the semis
vendredi 7 juin 2002 –
Weather conditions permitting at lunchtime tomorrow the first semi final between Alinghi and GBR Challenge, followed by Team New Zealand against the Outlaws should take place. They will be disputed in a best or three race format.
In the first race of today between Alinghi and The Outlaws, Russel Coutts imposed his law once again. After a spectacular pre start Alinghi gained control from the start. The race was a close run affair. Chris Law capitalized on a mistake made by the Swiss team at the first downwind mark, and passed ahead. By second upwind leg Coutts showed all of his class by regaining the lead and reached the finish line first.
The second race was more emotional. Team New Zealand controlled the race gaining a slight advantage over Le Defì Areva until the last upwind mark. Here the team made an error by setting up the gennaker late. Le Delfì capitalized on this mistake by getting back into the race and put pressure on the Kiwis until the last seconds of the race. Team New Zealand crossed the finish line by half a length.
GBR Challenge and the Outlaws gained the other two places in the semi finals, and on Saturday they will race again to try to beat Coutts and Barker.
