The six America’s Cup teams have agreed to a project that will see the existing fleet of AC45 catamarans modified into fully foiling catamarans for racing in the America’s Cup World Series (ACWS).
Importantly, the teams have also committed to continue to race the foiling AC45s on the America’s Cup World Series circuit in 2018, following the conclusion of the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.
“I’m pleased all of the competitors have agreed on a way forward, beyond the current America’s Cup cycle,” said Harvey Schiller, the Commercial Commissioner for the 35th America’s Cup.
“To have the teams give certainty to all stakeholders as to what will happen following the racing in 2017, regardless of who wins, is a huge step forward for all involved.”
The teams have undertaken the project to modify the one-design AC45s into fully foiling catamarans with a view to racing the foiling versions as early as the 2015 ACWS season.
A feasibility study has been commissioned to determine whether the mods will need to wait until the 2016 season as the timeline to make changes to the entire fleet ahead of racing in 2015 is extremely tight.
The competitors have also appointed a working group to select a Regatta Director, as required by the Protocol.
The Defender of the America’s Cup, The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, represented by Team New Zealand, and the Challenger of Record, The Royal Yacht Squadron Ltd, represented by Athena Racing, have signed the Protocol for the Louis Vuitton 38th America’s Cup set to take place in Naples, in the summer of 2027. The Protocol introduces a (…)

For the Defender, Emirates Team New Zealand having won the America’s Cup three times in a row, it now presents an unprecedented opportunity for the continued growth of the America’s Cup from the strongest foundation of success in recent history.
Emirates Team New Zealand concluded a historic chapter, winning the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup after an epic final showdown in Barcelona against the Challenger of Record, INEOS Britannia, in a single race that ebbed and flowed from the outset but ultimately saw the Kiwis secure victory by 37 seconds.
In the full glare of the world’s media spotlight, in a race sandwiched between the opening two races of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match, Italy’s Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli beat Britain’s Athena Pathway to win the inaugural Puig Women’s America’s Cup after an impressive demonstration of cool, calm, and collected match-racing of the (…)
Inches and hard yards were fought for in Barcelona today in a classic final race at the Louis Vuitton Cup, and when the dust settled from the on-water fireworks, it was INEOS Britannia that emerged as the top Challenger and secured their place in the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup Match, where they will face the Defender Emirates Team New (…)
Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli’s young guns, generational talent, dominated the UniCredit Youth America’s Cup Final with a comprehensive victory over NYYC American Magic in a high-adrenaline, six-leg, race sailed in winds up to 18 knots and big waves. Led by the mercurial Marco Gradoni, undoubtedly a name for the future of America’s Cup racing for (…)
It is very rare to have the opportunity of sailing onboard a racing boat such as a Volvo Ocean 60, and it is particularly special when it is race boat that is taking part in the world’s premier ocean race. For most casual sailors, just to take the helm and feel the responsiveness of these sleek ocean racers is a memorable experience in (…)
A "transbiscay" to set the boat up, a succession of gybes to clear Cape Finistere, then steer 180°, due south and the whole coast of Portugal is unfolding on fast forward to Orange’s windward. After one and a half day’s racing, the thirteen oilies of Peyron’s men are already drying in the Iberian sunshine.
We were warned that this Saturday March 2nd would be classified "Orange" for the half-term traffic, both outward bound and inward bound ? and also on the Atlantic with the toing and froing of the two "Giants" : back to port for the unfortunate Geronimo and a fresh start this morning at 08 hours 36 minutes and 21 seconds (French time) for Bruno (…)
