Tour de France à la voile

The Med yet again produces surprise results

The fleet left the docks in Sète this morning at 6 :00 in order to start the second Mediterranean offshore race to Marseille. But once again there was not enough wind to start right away and therefore, the boats motored for nearly 4 hours.

At 9:43, the race committee set up a start line off Port-Carmargue, 18 miles away from Sète and 57 miles from Marseille. The first three attempts at a start were general recalls. The fourth start was a good start under flag Z at 10h15.

It was Dieppe Seine Maritime, helmed by Franck Cammas who had the best start. At the top mark, 2 miles from the start line, overall leader Ville de Genève Carrefour Prévention, skippered by Etienne David, had got into the lead ahead of students Cap Université–St-Quentin en Yvelines and Nantes-St-Nazaire.

"The wind shifted to the left during the first beat. We anticipated that shift and therefore went far to the left and gained a lot thanks to that", explained Jean-Marc Monnard, helmsman onboard the Swiss boat, during the radio chat.

Later on, at the Beau Duc buoy, which lies 30 miles from the finish, Ville de Genève Carrefour Prévention was still in the lead ahead of Cap Université-St-Quentin-en-Yvelines, but it was Cassis Mauguio Carnon that had climbed to third place.

"Vasco Vascotto has really brought good spirit on board as well as positive pressure that seems to boost everyone. The conditions today are very fickle and light. Earlier on, we sailed further offshore, but came back towards the shore as the wind shifted to the south", said Vincent Portugal, manager and crew of Cassis-Maugio Carnon.

According to those who have local knowledge, the passage of the Rhone’s mouth, just after Beau-Duc, could be a difficult one. "We’ll have to watch out as the current it can be very tricky there", said 60-footer trimaran skipper Franck Cammas, helmsman onboard Dieppe Seine-Maritime. "I’m happy to come to Marseille as I haven’t sailed there for quite a long time", added Cammas who is from Aix-en-Provence, next to Marseille.

The wind dropped and got really shifty towards the end of the race. It was rather impossible to tell who was in the lead until the finish line as the fleet was really spread out.
