237 Competitors took part at the famous Down Wind Dash 2012. The famous event that takes the attention of South Africa every year is a long distance, where the best windsurfers and kiters compete in long downwind reaches from Langebaan all the way down to the port of Saldana.

20 km of course that since 1984 had all different sort of weather conditions. As usual the wind was there also this year, with a good constant 20 plus knots over the course, getting a bit lighter through the finish line. Favourites of the event was the Gaastra team with the Italian Champion Alberto Menegatti, the flying Camel Arnon Dagan and Italian Wave master Andrea Rosati challenging the best SA windsurfer and Kiters.

First out of the line were the 2 Italians Alberto Menegatti and Andrea Rosati, arriving at the first mark full speed, with Dagan on the heels. On leg 2 Menegatti with his new 8,6 Vapor sail and Isonic 107 shows problems on controlling the gusts above 20 knots, leaving the door open to Dagan that jibes right ahead of him, pushing the 3rd leg with his new 7,9 Vapor in very swelly and choppy conditions. Following and not letting go Menegatti get back close to Dagan at the end of the 3rd reach when the wind start to get a touch lighter and the sea gets flatter, having the 2 team mates at mark 3 very very close.

The second last leg is more downwind and the wind is not as strong as in the upper part of the course, the situation gets inverted with Alberto Menegatti now with the right size the 8,6 overtaking Dagan just before the last jibe, getting him in front to close the last reach in first place, after a long battle with Arnon. In 3rd Andrea Rosati with a good start, close in the first and second reach to the group ahead, had to let go a bit in the 3rd leg cause of the conditions, closing anyway with a nice lead from the 4th arrived and first Kiter Heckroodt Colin.

195 the competitors able to close the finish line out of the 237 that had inscribed for the event, a very good number that shows the commitment and the interest in this event.

Alberto Menegatti :

" A very exciting race, with hard conditions for me cause of the choice of a sail that turned out to be big in most of the course. I’m very happy anyway with my gear that showed me great performance also in hard conditions. My 8,6 Vapor together with my 107 Isonic and my Z fin is just an amazing combo, that i’m looking very forward to race on in 2012 ! A very special thanks also to my new trainer Roberto Actis that allowed me to arrive in perfect shape for this event. thanks to all my sponsors : Starboard, Gaastra, Z Fins, Trentino, Selin srl., Quiksilver, Circolo Surf Surf #Surf Torbole, Smith, www.prozis
