Hungarian solo skipper Nandor Fa brought his Spirit of Hungary across the finish line of the Vendée Globe at 10 hrs 54 m 09 secs UTC this Wednesday morning to earn an excellent eighth place overall.

Fa, at 63, completes this epic eighth edition of the legendary solo non stop round the world race 24 years after becoming the first ever non-French skipper to complete the Vendée Globe.

His elapsed time on Spirit of Hungary, which he designed himself, is 93 days 22 hrs 52 mins 09 sec. He sailed 27,850 nm at an average speed of 12.35 knots.

Armel Le Cléac’h wins the Vendée Globe 2016-17 in record time

French sailor Armel Le Cléac’h has today won the Vendée Globe, setting a new record Record #sailingrecord for the solo non-stop round the world race in the process. Le Cléac’h, 39, from Brittany, crossed the finish line of the race in Les Sables d’Olonne, France, at 1537hrs UTC after 74 days, 3 hours, 35 minutes and 46 seconds at sea on his 60ft racing yacht Banque Populaire VIII.

Gaetano Mura’s dream ends in Fremantle, in Western Australia, where Italia arrived on December 31st, affected by several damages. In the Australian port the issues have been assessed and the verdict was unequivocal : Italia needs to stop for more than just some hours. Not only the satellite system needs to be repaired, but some structural parts that have been affected by the impact with an unidentified floating object on the night of December 9th, just after passing Cape of Good Hope.
